openDBL 1st Hackathon: Innovating Smart Quality Control with AR

The openDBL Hackathon on Innovating Smart Quality Control with Augmented Reality (AR) took place on January 22, 2025, at CEMOSA headquarters in Málaga, Spain.
Organized by openDBL partners CEMOSA, CETMA, and Digiotouch R&D, the event brought together participants to develop AR solutions using Microsoft HoloLens for the Smart Quality Control application, developed by CEMOSA as part of the project.
Gloria Calleja Rodríguez, R&D Engineer at CEMOSA, kicked off the hackathon by welcoming the participants and setting the stage for a day of collaboration and innovation.
Italo Spada, Project Coordinator of openDBL, introduced the project and its AR application use case. He demonstrated the HoloLens UI/UX, giving participants a clear understanding of the technology and presented the challenge, outlining the hackathon’s objectives and expectations for the teams.
Following this, Gloria guided participants through the Smart Quality Control app, showcasing its functionality with a video demo. This gave the participants a deeper understanding of the tool they would be working with.
Daniele Magrì, AR/VR Specialist Developer at CETMA, then led a hands-on session demonstrating how to operate the Microsoft HoloLens and use gestures to interact with applications. This practical session equipped participants with the necessary skills to develop their prototypes.

Participants were divided into four teams, engaging in ideation, mentoring sessions, and prototype development. The event concluded with a pitching session, where each team presented their HoloLens based solutions to the jury.

After careful evaluation based on established criteria and a scoring system, the jury announced Team 3, consisting of Francisco Salapić Fernández, Software Developer Intern at CEMOSA, Francisco Zájara Gómez, Software Developer at CEMOSA, and Guillermo Diaz Quesada, Industrial Engineering Student at Universidad de Jaén, as the winners.

A huge congratulations to the winning team, and a heartfelt thank you to all participants and organizers for making this event a success!
Stay tuned for more innovation challenges and updates from the openDBL project.
